Argo based co-operatives for livelihood

The Agro-Based Cooperatives for Livelihood Project, implemented in Kailali District (Lamkichuwa, Bardgoriya, Bhajani VDCs, and Tikapur & Dhangadhi Municipalities), aimed to strengthen the livelihoods of freed Kamaiyas and promote economic empowerment among poor and marginalized communities. By fostering collective economic practices through agro-based cooperatives, the project sought to enhance income generation and build resilience in the target populations.

Key initiatives of the project included:

  • Capacity Building: Training freed Kamaiyas and marginalized groups in modern agricultural techniques, cooperative management, and financial literacy to ensure sustainable growth and self-reliance.
  • Establishment of Agro-Based Cooperatives: Supporting the formation and strengthening of cooperatives to enable collective farming, resource pooling, and market access.
  • Access to Resources: Providing seeds, tools, and technical support to improve agricultural productivity and diversify income sources.
  • Market Linkages: Facilitating connections with markets to ensure fair prices for produce and sustainable economic opportunities.
  • Inclusive Participation: Ensuring active involvement of women, Dalits, and other marginalized groups in decision-making and cooperative activities.

Through this project, freed Kamaiyas and vulnerable communities were empowered to break the cycle of poverty, achieve economic stability, and build a better future collectively.
