Quality Education through Disaster Resilience schools in Kailali
The Quality Education through Disaster Resilient Schools in Kailali project was implemented in the Kailali District of Nepal, reaching 75 community schools over a period from September 2010 to August 2013. The initiative aimed to improve the quality of education while fostering disaster resilience within schools and communities.
Enhancing Awareness and Capacity for Quality Education
The project worked to build the awareness, knowledge, and capacity of key stakeholders, including school management committees, parents, teachers, and students, to ensure the delivery of quality education and promote responsive school governance.
Promoting Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Education
Recognizing the vulnerability of schools and communities to disasters, the project focused on increasing awareness and understanding of DRR among children, parents, and teachers. Training sessions and educational materials were provided to empower these groups with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare for and mitigate disaster risks.
Designing and Promoting "Safe School" Standards
The project emphasized the importance of creating disaster-resilient schools by designing and promoting "Safe School" standards. Parents, students, and teachers were trained and mobilized as champions of school-based DRR initiatives. Activities included structural assessments, safety drills, and the development of emergency preparedness plans.
Advocating for Enabling Education Policies
Advocacy efforts were undertaken to influence education policies at the district and national levels. The project worked to incorporate DRR and "Safe School" standards into the school curriculum, aiming to institutionalize these practices for long-term sustainability.
The project created safer, more resilient learning environments while strengthening the overall education system. By integrating DRR into school governance and curricula, it equipped children and communities with the tools to face future challenges confidently. This initiative highlighted the critical link between quality education and disaster resilience, setting a strong foundation for safer and more inclusive schools in the Kailali District.
